MG MGB Technical - The #@*^%# buzzer!

Thanks to all for their efforts on my behalf. I have another '?'. Re; 1980 B's

Where's that pig fu*king buzzer that's been yelling at me
every time I use the key?
The owner & I want it out & on the pavement while we take turns pulverizing it with my big ball pein hammer.

Yeah, I am a pig. I've only posted two questions but each has demonstrated what a lowlife I am because I can say things like "pig fu*king buzzer" and "#@*^%#".

This polite, civilized BBS needs some shakin' up and I is the guy to do it. Hoooraahhhh. Provin that us Carolinians are a bunch of redneck scum.
R.S.C. Caskie

OK, message received and absorbed. NB I left most of Califoria behind, Oops, I meant in my background.

Like many humans, I begin to fuse after three daze of being pointlessly buzzed.

Stewart, the contrite and chastened.

The buzzer is under the radio opening. If you pull out the radio (if you have one) look in the area below where the raido fits you should see the device. It's a black box about 2 inches long by 1 1/2 wide held in by one philips head screw. Charlie A.

Stewart. Not sure what you are being upset about. Such questions are not always answered because many of us now own cars that have been modified over the years and such problems have been dealt with by a previous owner. Both my older daughter's 77B and my 79 LE seem to have had any buzzers removed or bypassed. Thus, many of us are not aware of such problems because previous owners/ their mechanics, have dealt with the problem.

Several years ago, I purchase a low milage, Arizona, MGB with a seized engine and 78K miles on it. Having restored it to "starting condition", I find that it, too, has the objectionable buzzer. Something that none of my other cars has.

Charles. You have given the location of the buzzer. Now, what needs to be done to de-activate it? Can it simply be unplugged? If so, do we need to cut any wires, or is there some form of connector? If we need to cut the wires, do we need to splice them together as one would when de-activating a neutral safety switch (used on automatic transmissions to prevent starting except in the "park" or "neutral" positions), or can we simply unplug the buzzer and all remains the same--but more quiet?

I find the buzzer to be a major irritant when running up the engine to exercise it periodically. Do not expect to have the car on the road for several months and would, when exercising the engine, prefer the sound of the engine to the sound of the buzzer.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Les, Stewart; Advance wiring's late US market diagram shows a purple/pink wire from the ignition switch to the LH door buzzer switch, a purple/green wire goes from the switch to pin 2 in the seat belt module/buzzer. Late UK market drawings don't have the door switch and pin two on the seat belt module/buzzer isn't used. Removing or disconnecting the door switch will disable the buzzer and shouldn't affect anything else. You may have to remove the kick panel to remove the wires from the switch. I'm going by the wiring diagrams and don't have a late car to test my thoughts. The wire could be disconnected anywhere in the circuit but the door switch looks to be the easiest place to work.

Mine's disconnected where Clifton suggests. I left a bullet connector on the end of the wire to make sure it doesn't short.

Stewart-

You can just unplug the buzzer. The plug is located on the buzzer with the following wires connected to it. No cutting required. The buzzer is located to the right of the radio, if you have a radio installed in the stock location.

purple (incoming power)
purple/green (goes to the blue switch in the driver's door)
yellow/brown (goes to the seat buckles)
yellow/purple (goes to the seat belt warning lamp)
black (ground)
white/red (comes from the ignition switch)

Unplugging the buzzer will have no affect on any of the other electrical systems in the car.

P.S. I generally do not respond to those asking for assistance in the manner in which you originally did. I'm glad that you have changed your tune and have decided to act in a socially acceptable manner.
Kimberly

Kimberly, I had many hours of remorse after my flare-up.
I know better.
If it's a reason, I had been toiling in the footwell on and off for 3 days in 90 degree heat trying to install a dead foot rest on the clutch side, a new choke linkage and cable throught the firewall and a previously very sloppy accel pedal that would stick and race the engine I was tuning with its new induction system.

The buzzer at one point refused to go silent,,,,that's when I wrote.

Many thanks to all. I will detach the offending buzzer on my car as per Kimberly's directions. Since there is no radio, nor a blanking plate inplace, that sounds easier than removing the kick panel and detaching the wiring from the switch.

If anyone has an unwanted orphan buzzer that works and is looking for a new home, I have the perfect home for it in a well pampered MG!
Clive Reddin

In the past 22 years, I've probably owned over 30 MGBs and I have yet to encounter an operational buzzer. That's how rare Stewart's problem is. Taking the opposite track, I bought a chime unit from Radio shack, wiring the hot side to the red/white panel lamp circuit and the ground to the door switch for the courtesy lamps. Thus I hear the chime if I open the door without first turning off the headlamps or parking lamps. Since so many US state laws require use of headlamps in the rain (a good idea), I can't tell you how many times this little device has saved me from a dead battery. Even with the halogen bulbs, I cannot see my dashlights in daylight.
